The British Pacific Fleet along with Anzac and US ships bombarded the island for 6 months. There was no amphibious assault. The 30,000+ Japanese military personnel didn_qt_t surrender until October 4th-ish. More ordnance was expended against these islands than Iwo jima. These islands are well worth a visit once this stupid virus is dealt with. Especially Iriomote.
