Looking for photographs of fighting and general scenes in Riparbella area (Pisa) in early July 1944, particularly showing U.S. Army 363rd Infantry Regiment, 91st Division.

As I just heard from an Italian historian who's studied that portion of the war, it appears they pulled many of the Signal Corps photographers to southern France in Operation Dragoon. So, example are not great or plentiful.

In the case of my story, the young lieutenant's unit hit there first combat on 4 July and he was killed on the 6th.

After a month's training in North Africa, the 363rd Regiment arrived in Italy just days ahead of their first fighting. The landing probably was rather routine and not invasion force as the Allies had secured the coastline immediately north of Rome.

Their first action was in Riparbella. The infantry troops of the 363rd faced heavy artillery attacks. There appears to have been minimal close-order fighting in the early stage. So, artillery firing photos and film can fill in. What I have seen, infantry marching makes up most of the stills.

The lieutenant was killed on or near Monte Vaso, near the town of Chianni in an intense artillery attack. German forces were held up in a farmhouse on the side of the hill.

Not much to go on but that's what I'm facing.

Many thanks!

Dennis
