For many people, the US National Archives (NARA) are inaccessible. I am fortunate to live nearby and do research there on a weekly basis. I also have a large format scanner. As such, I am able to produce high-quality scans of documents and photographs and then sell them at reasonable prices. For exa...

Hello, I often visit the US Archives (NARA) and scan photos and documents for my own research and to sell. Sometimes I find interesting material which share it with other people. Last week I found seven color photos of the Westwall taken by the US Army. I have posted a "low-resolution" ima...

I apologize for my tardy reply. I somehow missed the last two posts on this thread. Kirill - The contact sheets are not captioned except with the photographer's name. Often, but not always, there is a date. Therefore, I generally don't know what units are depicted in the collection. In some cases, t...

Here is a photo I really like, taken by SS-KB Augustin (LAH in France and Holland 1940, Russia 1941-1943) who was was of the more prolific photographers in the collection. Obviously a Russian Front photo.

Hi Bill,

It is a nice photo. Based on your post, I looked closer and noticed that behind the Pershings are Shermans. All in all, a nice photo.

I wonder what the tanks crews were thinking!

Here is a photo from the US National Archives that speaks volumes about WWII and its aftermath. Taken on 2 June 1945 in Ilfield, Germany, a captain in the 5th Armored Division marries a member of the American Red Cross (how did that happen so fast? He must have been a staff officer!). In this photo ...

I was scanning some more SS-Kriegsberichter contact sheets at the US Archives, when I came across this - a contact sheet from SS-KB Cantzler with a series of portrait shots. One of them was cut out. I wonder why. My guess it was done at the archives by someone who used it to make a fake SS-Identific...

Hi Ian, It is difficult too say because there are no definitive identifying features visible in the image. If it is Maginot Line, then it is a "campaign" casemate built for the interval troops and not part of one of the primary ouvrages. The best clue is probably in the detail of the weapo...

Hi Tim, I live 30 minutes from NARA and try to visit there every Wednesday. I am in the process of scanning the entire SS-Kriegsberichter collection, which I will offer for sale on DVD. The photos are from contact sheets, so the quality is sometimes spotty. I am not an expert on the Waffen-SS, but w...

Next, is a photo by August Ahrens who served with the SS-Kavallerie Division in Russia in 1943. I like the photograph because is shows a tactical "sandtable" briefing to senior officers.

Last week, I was at the US Archives scanning up contact sheets from the SS-Kriegsberichter Photographer collection. Here are is a sample of what is in the collection. First up are two photos by Willy Altstadt who was with the Wiking Division is Russia 1943. What strikes me about the first photo, is ...
